Written within days of the London riots in August 2011 and recorded under a railway arch where the band rehearse in Clapham Junction, literally metres from Lavender Hill.

It is a beautiful laminated card package that folds out to form a maltese cross. Each of the 9 panels are beautifully illustrated, with a piece of artwork for each song (accompanied by the full lyrics) by the wonderful US artist Nathan Vernau (www.nathanvernau.com), who also designed the exclusive album front cover.  We really hope these photos get across how superb the packaging is, we are very proud of it indeed* (*as proud as you can be of something you had next to nothing to do with, like, errr, the country you were born in for example).

This is a version of our song Poppy Fields, recorded totally live, mixed and produced by our super-talented axeman Chris How Kin Sang. Poppy Fields is an older song of ours but probably one of our best.  It is broadly speaking a song of yearning – broadly speaking, though  not yet entirely, set in wartime – for whatever reason alot of WW2 imagery seems apropos when the ol’ song writing comes around.

Placing almost anything in the context of a war makes it all that more poignant, and it can’t hurt to remind ourselves of just how fortunate we are that everything we do is free of such suffocation.

The point of this song I guess is that anyone expressing the sentiments of the lyric in peacetime – might well have the same strength of feeling as the hypothetical flanders field soldier, but it is humbling how much less strife we have to go through to act upon those feelings.  There is nothing like considering that your predecessors have managed to cross decimated, shrapnel ridden bogs in order to make themselves heard to put ones own temporary bout of coyness into perspective.

None of this makes any sense unless you read the lyric that is below. And not even then, because its fluffy bedwetting rubbish :)

Nobody Else Will Know is a brash, expansive sort of a rock song about nothing more than wanting to escape, to get away – not in a Thompsons summer sun in Corfu sort of a way – its more about the idea of 2 people wanting to retreat into their own little world, in whatever sense. I think the whole tone of the lyric can be summed up by one of the final lines ‘we’ll run so fast that sparks will fly, we’ll move our feet and we’ll kick up dust, cos through the skin and the bone and the blood, we are young and in wanderlust – and nobody else will know’. The song was written in India, which makes it sounds far more exotic than it actually is, or something that the NME would blather on about in a preview of some haircuts new album, but whatever, it was written there so nyyyyerrr :) As far as ‘interesting facts about songs that were written in India’ go – it is definitely better than ‘Wild Honey Pie’ by the Beatles, but probably not as good as ‘The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill’ – but then what is. That all American bullet headed Saxon Mother’s son – Altogether now !

ANIMALS

This track has been played quite a bit on BBC Radio 6 – which (I’m sure you will *all* agree, without exception) on its own makes it a station well worth saving (he said not at all self interestedly) – so get joining those facebook groups/emailing the idiots at the BBC who want to close it.

“All the stuff in the lyrics, the references to robots and checking pulses, comes from a nagging suspicion that sometimes people tend to put too much effort into searching out just any sort of relationship to define us, instead of living life for its own sake – which is ultimately alot more satisying. I certainly find that the most interesting people don’t go explicitly searching for that  sort of thing – and are all the better and more desirable because of it.  It becomes one of these self-fulfiling things. I guess the line ‘All I want to do tonight is dance, but not like that’ is some sort of statement of intent along those lines.”

We Don’t Believe In Love no more is about a few different ideas, that all I guess have the idea of sometimes feeling fed from every angle the idea of having to incessently and indiscriminately seek out something new, something different, something ‘better’ than we already have, and what often seems like the absence of any sort of appraisal of what we already have – and how tiring that can be. Huh, heavy. Look out for the cheeky white boy samba guitar solo section 2/3 of the way in to lighten the mood.

Lux in theory

Lux Lisbon are an English Rock and Roll band (other bands are available) – but more specifically Lux Lisbon are the band that Wings could have been. We  sing songs that are mostly epic widescreen indie-rock rubbish taking their cues from songs what we reckon are well good (and also  from some bits of songs what are not well good). Often it would seem that this manifests itself as bittersweet love stories set to soaring melodies, boy-girl harmony, clarion-call guitar, piano and violin. Lux Lisbon is a character in the Jeffrey Eugenides novel ‘The Virgin Suicides’ – played by Kirsten Dunst in the ace 1999 Sofia Coppola film of the same name. Do Ch-Check it.

Writing a song is a curious activity,  and often very enjoyable – but in my view without doubt the most exciting part of the whole shebang is when you have hammered it into shape, recorded a quick demo and listen back to it  (and this may sound silly) without having to play it.  It is oddly satisfying to experience something you know so well purely as a listener, you know,  in the same way you experience all those other songs.

‘Da wonderz ov t’internetz’ mean that the option is now there to put a song up at this stage in its development – and that’s wonderful for musicians who recognise the excitement I have described above, and to be able to act upon it can be a real buzz – nothing kills enthusiasm for a project  quite like the prospect of having to wait 6 months before anyone else gets to see something you are psyched about right now.

The flip side of this of course is the knowledge that ‘offering’  (ok, ok, ‘forcing upon’) people a sneak preview of anything unfinished will always dilute the impact when the final ‘unveiling’ (used so, so loosely) comes around – its the same difference in reaction as between showing someone their own living room that you have re-painted against the finished house that they didn’t know you had been building for them.

This page contains a demo of a song called  ’Come In From The Cold’ that recorded for the first time last night, although its been gestation for a good while now. Its only half a song at the moment but I like it, and so I’ve put it up.

In this instance then the buzz has won (so to speak) – but I have also considered the fact that it is quite possibly a song that sounds best just as it is – unadorned.

I may be wrong, but sometimes a song is just what it is – and trying to make it anything else only seems to reduce its effectiveness.

As anyone with even a cusory knowledge of our tunes will recognise – we rarely have to be encouraged to come up with things to add to a song but with this song I don’t really  get that familiar and nagging sense of  ’what about if we did this with it?’

So on the basis that the ‘finished version’ of this song may not be a million miles from what there is here there seems no harm in putting it up. Or at least that is how I am justifying it to myself.

Most people reading this will probably be living in one of the most prosperous countries on earth, in more comfort than 99 % of the people who have ever lived and yet there always seem to me to be too many people who are perhaps too quick to complain about lives that are, historically speaking, in terms of the average human existence, absurdly blessed. We all do it in moments of weakness, but I don’t want to make a habit of it. I might well be failing in that regard, but hopefully this song, with its suitably admonishing tone, can be just a small personal reminder.

Here is a live, embryonic version of a gentle little  song that we recorded completely without  overdubs,  late at night, in a big old house in the country.

We have recorded another version that is nearly  complete that will go on our record ‘Your Heart Is A Weapon The Size Of Your Fist’

The Maginot Line was, as anyone who was awake during Mrs Kanalas’ year 8 history (which was everyone, they were great) class will tell you, the collective name given to the battlements and the like that were built by the French (to great fanfare) along their borders to prevent a German invasion post WW1/Pre WW2.  By all accounts the ol’Maginot  made them feel safe, and it made them feel protected. Wikipediaify it if you can’t remember how that one turned out.

Here then, it could be something that once commanded your unwaveringly belief, but for whatever reason you have seen that belief begin to fade.

The idea for this rather fanastical day comes from the Genius that is Lux Lisbon favourite Richard Herring.

Charlie Chaplin’s moustache was stolen by Hitler to such an extent that we now associate it with Nazism rather than with comedy. Chaplin satirised Hitler in one of his later films ‘The Great Dictator’ which was an extraordinary piece made on the eve on the 2nd World War that pleaded for understanding and compassion. The idea and aim of the ‘Charlie Chaplin Day for Democracy’ is to encourage people to adopt a toothbrush moustache for the day, in order to reclaim the moustache for comedy, much as labels such as ‘queer’ and ‘nigger’ have been reclaimed by the very groups that they once repressed. The hope is that this guerilla toothbrush-moustaching (that’s right, everything is a verb now) will help make a pertinent pro-democracy statement, especially in a time where voters are being ubiquitously described as ‘apathetic’ due to clandestine and illicit behaviour by MPs, which enabled ignorant border groups such as the BNP and UKIP to gain more credence.

Proud is a superb venue (its actually an art gallery during the day and the attached bar is a former horse hospital) so it is an extremely atmospheric space. its not just a ‘gig’ – its a art/performance night too – so something different. We Don’t Believe In Love no more is about a few different ideas, that all I guess have the idea of sometimes feeling fed from every angle the idea of having to incessently and indiscriminately seek out something new, something different, something ‘better’ than we already have, and what often seems like the absence of any sort of appraisal of what we already have – and how tiring that can be. Huh, heavy. Look out for the cheeky white boy samba guitar solo section 2/3 of the way in to lighten the mood.

This is a version of our song Poppy Fields, recorded totally live, mixed and produced by our super-talented axeman Chris How Kin Sang. Poppy Fields is an older song of ours but probably one of our best.  It is broadly speaking a song of yearning – broadly speaking, though  not yet entirely, set in wartime – for whatever reason alot of WW2 imagery seems apropos when the ol’ song writing comes around.

Placing almost anything in the context of a war makes it all that more poignant, and it can’t hurt to remind ourselves of just how fortunate we are that everything we do is free of such suffocation.

The point of this song I guess is that anyone expressing the sentiments of the lyric in peacetime – might well have the same strength of feeling as the hypothetical flanders field soldier, but it is humbling how much less strife we have to go through to act upon those feelings.  There is nothing like considering that your predecessors have managed to cross decimated, shrapnel ridden bogs in order to make themselves heard to put ones own temporary bout of coyness into perspective.

None of this makes any sense unless you read the lyric that is below. And not even then, because its fluffy bedwetting rubbish :)

Kudos goes to our super-talented axeman Chris How Kin Sang for the first rate mixing and production job he has done on this – the first of 5 or 6 live tracks we will be making available to download very soon.

Nobody Else Will Know is a brash, expansive sort of a rock song about nothing more than wanting to escape, to get away – not in a Thompsons summer sun in Corfu sort of a way – its more about the idea of 2 people wanting to retreat  into their own little world, in whatever sense. I think the whole tone of the lyric can be summed up by one of the final lines ‘we’ll run so fast that sparks will fly, we’ll move our feet and we’ll kick up dust, cos through the skin and the bone and the blood, we are young and in wanderlust – and nobody else will know’.  The song was written in India, which makes it sounds far more exotic than it actually is, or something that the NME would blather on about in a preview of some haircuts new album, but whatever, it was written there so nyyyyerrr :) As far as  ‘interesting facts about songs that were written in India’ go – it is definitely better than ‘Wild Honey Pie’ by the Beatles, but probably not as good as ‘The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill’ – but then what is. That all American bullet headed Saxon Mother’s son – Altogether now !

Morning Everyone, As you can see from the nice shiny black car I have just stepped out of behind me  -  Lux Lisbon already have enough money, and so we are giving away our songs for free – or more accurately – in exchange for our own non-index linked currency we call  ’not money”.

‘Well thats not very specific recompense is it, that could mean almost anything at all and I am left confused and alienated, what an ignorant prat‘  I hear you muttering under your breath (you should really take off those tie mics). – and to be fair you make a good point – not that that counts for anything in this particular situation’ , you are out of luck there.

Let me explain.

Basically, we don’t want any money (we’d be doing choons for fun anyway, we like it) – but we would like it if as many people as possible could hear what we have been working hard on and are perhaps able to enjoy it too. They is this well awesome band called ‘Lux Lisbon’ that I like. Alot. Like, I like them alot alot alot. Well, I guess they’re ok.
